Wallpaper Calculator: Rolls with Pattern Repeat

Estimate rolls for one wall from actual roll dimensions and vertical repeat.

Use the roll label for width, length, and repeat, then match the run or lot when purchasing.

Measure the total wall width to cover.

Measure the required strip height.

Enter the usable width stated for the selected roll.

Enter the usable roll length stated for the selected product.

Enter the product repeat, or 0 for a pattern without vertical repeat.

Estimate boundary

What this result covers

  • Covers one rectangular wall and vertical repeat only; openings, multiple walls, match type, trimming, and defects require separate planning.
  • Use the result as a purchasing estimate and verify product instructions, site conditions, and local requirements before work begins.

How the calculation works

Formula

wall width ÷ roll width ÷ floor(roll length ÷ repeat-adjusted strip length)

Assumptions used

  • Pattern repeat is applied vertically to each full-height strip.

The tool keeps user-entered product values separate from the geometry, then rounds the recommended purchasing quantity up where the material is bought as a whole unit.

Worked example

Project inputs
12 ft wide × 8 ft high wall, 27 in × 27 ft roll, 21 in repeat
Purchase result
2 rolls after repeat adjustment and rounding up.

Enter these values in the calculator to reproduce the estimate. The purchase result uses the same tested calculation logic as the live tool.

Purchasing checklist

  1. Confirm usable roll dimensions.
  2. Read the repeat and match instructions.
  3. Buy matching run or lot numbers.

Common mistakes

  • Using nominal roll coverage.
  • Ignoring pattern repeat.
  • Mixing dye lots.

Roll quantity depends on usable coverage, repeat, total area, and matching run/lot numbers.
